Anglo Film Club Screening: “Sound of Torture” / Directed by Keren Shayo

Join us for NFCT’s third Anglo Film Club!

Based on the success of our first two events, The New Fund for Cinema and Television (NFCT) is excited to announce the next Anglo Film Club event on Sunday, May 18.

We will screen The Sound of Torture, a powerful and award-winning documentary that had its world premiere in IDFA in November 2013, and will premiere in Israel at the Docaviv Film Festival in May 2014.

Ever since Europe closed its gates to African refugees, thousands of Eritreans have fled the brutal dictatorship in their homeland and traveled north, to Israel. Many were seized by Bedouin smugglers as they crossed the Sinai desert. They are now held in camps and tortured until they pay a ransom. This film follows Eritrean radio presenter Meron Estefanos, who interviews thousands of refugees imprisoned in those camps from her home in Sweden. Through these radio interviews the film touches on many other moving stories. We hear about Hariti, 22, who gave birth to her first child in camp, while her husband tried to collect $30,000 in Israel to purchase their release; and about Timnit, 20, who disappeared along the Israeli-Egyptian border, and is still searched for by her brother.

The screening will be followed by a discussion in English with the film’s director and writer, Keren Shayo, as well as with a representative from the Eritrean community.

Saloona has graciously offered to donate a percentage of the evening’s food and drink proceeds to go toward an outreach campaign accompanying Sound of Torture to help raise awareness of the humanitarian crisis in Sinai and to demand an end to the torture camps.

There is limited space for this event, so please reserve your 20 NIS ticket.
