Wetland
In 1957, Israel completed the drainage of the Hula wetlands and lake to clear land for agriculture. The Hula drainage project was the “flagship operation” of the young State of Israel. A year before the drainage was complete, three photographers from Jerusalem left their jobs, homes, and families, pooled all their savings, and set out to document the wildlife of a marsh about to vanish. For an entire year, they crawled through the wetlands, built hides, and filmed the diverse animal life, leaving behind rare footage of what was meant to become Israel’s first color nature film, about a wetland that no longer exists.
